At Climate Edge Consulting (CEC), we are dedicated to transforming the agricultural landscape through innovative, sustainable, and climate-resilient practices, with a special focus on empowering women farmers. Our commitment is to equip farmers—especially women and smallholder farmers—with the knowledge, tools, and resources they need to transition from traditional to modern, sustainable farming practices. By enhancing productivity and profitability while conserving resources, we aim to foster resilient farming communities that thrive in the face of climate change and economic challenges.
Our Approach to Sustainable Agriculture
Promotion of Zero Tillage and Direct Seeded Rice (DSR): We advocate for conservation agriculture practices like Zero Tillage and Direct Seeded Rice (DSR), which reduce soil disturbance, preserve soil health, and minimize water usage. These practices are particularly beneficial in areas facing water scarcity, helping farmers save on irrigation costs while maintaining yield levels.
Mechanical Rice Transplantation: Mechanical rice transplantation offers an efficient and labor-saving alternative to manual transplantation, a task that is often labor-intensive for women farmers. We provide technical support, training, and access to machinery for smallholder farmers, enabling them to adopt this technology and reduce drudgery while improving planting efficiency and crop stand.
Early Sowing of Wheat for Yield Optimization: CEC promotes the early sowing of wheat using mechanized solutions to combat terminal heat stress, a major yield-limiting factor for wheat. Our support includes educating farmers on appropriate sowing windows, seed treatment, and mechanized sowing techniques that enhance germination and yield.
Post-Harvest Management and Farm Mechanization: Post-harvest losses are a significant challenge for small and marginal farmers, particularly women who often lack access to the right tools and infrastructure. We offer training and access to post-harvest machinery such as small-scale threshers, dryers, and storage solutions to ensure that crops are handled, processed, and stored optimally. This helps farmers retain the quality of their produce, access better markets, and increase their income.
Farm Mechanization for Small Farmers: Mechanization is often seen as out of reach for smallholder farmers due to high costs and lack of access. CEC bridges this gap by promoting small-scale, affordable mechanization solutions, such as mini-tillers, hand-operated seeders, and portable harvesters. We also facilitate shared ownership and custom hiring models to enable small farmers, especially women, to access machinery on a need basis without heavy capital investment.
Intercropping for Income Diversification: We support women farmers in adopting intercropping practices that maximize land use efficiency, improve soil fertility, and reduce risk by diversifying their income sources. Intercropping helps farmers optimize inputs and achieve better yields from the same piece of land, contributing to food security and economic stability.
Soil Health and Resource Management: Soil health is at the core of sustainable agriculture. We conduct soil health assessments and educate farmers on integrated nutrient management and organic farming practices. Our focus is on promoting the use of bio-fertilizers, crop residue management, and minimal chemical inputs to restore soil fertility and ensure long-term productivity.
Women-Centric Approach in Agriculture: Women play a pivotal role in agriculture, yet they often lack access to resources, training, and decision-making power. CEC’s women-centric programs focus on building their capacities in modern farming techniques, entrepreneurship, and leadership. We conduct gender-sensitive training sessions, create women farmer groups, and promote women-led Farmer Producer Organizations (FPOs) to enhance their influence in agricultural value chains.
Participatory Research and On-Farm Demonstrations: We believe that farmers learn best by doing. CEC conducts participatory research and on-farm demonstrations to test and showcase sustainable farming practices. By involving farmers, especially women, in research and decision-making, we ensure that the solutions are practical, context-specific, and easily adoptable.
Climate Resilient Practices: Climate change poses a significant threat to agriculture, particularly for vulnerable communities. We promote climate-resilient practices such as drought-tolerant crop varieties, water-efficient irrigation methods, and crop diversification. Our aim is to help farmers, especially women, adapt to changing climatic conditions, mitigate risks, and ensure stable production.
Key Initiatives
Farmer Training and Capacity Building: We conduct regular training sessions for farmers, focusing on modern agricultural practices, farm mechanization, and post-harvest management. Our training programs are designed to be accessible and practical, enabling women farmers to easily apply the techniques learned.
Technology Adoption and Digital Inclusion: Technology can be a game-changer for smallholder farmers. We support farmers in adopting digital tools for weather forecasting, market information, and crop management. Our mobile-based advisory services ensure that farmers receive timely, accurate, and location-specific information.
Market Linkages and Value Chain Development: Connecting farmers to profitable markets is crucial for increasing their income. We support the formation of Farmer Producer Organizations (FPOs) and provide linkages to buyers, processors, and retailers, ensuring that farmers—especially women—get fair prices for their produce.
Access to Finance and Resource Mobilization: Women farmers often face barriers in accessing finance for farm inputs and equipment. We work with financial institutions to create inclusive financial products and provide support in availing credit, subsidies, and grants. Our aim is to make farming more viable and less financially burdensome.
Our Impact
Through our comprehensive support and services, we have successfully enabled hundreds of farmers to transition to sustainable agricultural practices, adopt modern farming techniques, and access better markets. By focusing on women farmers, we aim to close the gender gap in agriculture, ensuring that women have equal opportunities to succeed and contribute to the prosperity of their communities.
